what to expect : fakulti perubatan uitm part 2

Assalamualaikum and evening to all. It had been quite sometimes since I write (a week ?) . To be honest I was quite disappointed with the last post because  I think I did a rather poor job in explaining a lot of things. I think that I can explain more if I did it in BM so I thought that I would do this post in BM but it stroke my mind that the reason I create this blog is to improve my English because I am a poor writer in both BM and English, so I am going to write it in English . So before I start I would like to apologise if I did give a wrong info or inadequate info throughout the blog . Anyway this post is going to be long but bare with me okay ?

All of the medicine course usually adopt  two different kind of system. These system are traditional medicine and a new integrated  Problem based learning (PBL)  system. Traditional system is where you learn everything such as anatomy biochemistry etc in jargon  and you yourself relate the subjects towards one another by yourself. To be simplified, it is like you learn every country by alphabet and by your own effort , you need to divide these country by region and relate it to each other.  What I like the most about UiTM is it uses another system which is PBL integrated system so it is a bit easier.  PBL integrated system is a system where you are trained to diagnose the patient based on their symptoms. So all of you are going to learn the disease according to their respective system such as heart attack will only be taught during cardiovascular system. Both has pros and Cons but I prefer the new system.

Before I go on a bit further , throughout this 5 years of medschool we will have two phase. Pre-clinical and Clinical Phase. The first and second year is considered as Pre-clinical because we learn more on theory rather on practicality. The 3rd,4th and 5th is considered Clinical phase which we will have more practicality rather on theory.  In UiTM we are going to have two professional exam which is professional exam I and Professional Exam II. Professional Exam I is during the 4th sem which is the end of the 2nd year . Your knowledge throughout 1st and 2nd year will be tested. For professional exam II , it is in the end of 5th year . Your knowledge throughout 5 years of medschool will be tested.

Since I just finished my 1st year I am going to elaborate more on pre-clinical phase rather on Clinical.Professional Exam I is a ticket for you to enter the clinical phase . But how do you pass the professional exam ?  First You need to know the weightage of the marks. Every semester you will have final exam and this contribute to 10 % of the carry mark of professional exam, except for 4th sem because you do not have final but you have professional exam.
Professional exam I (100%) : 1st sem : 10%
                                                2nd sem : 10%
                                                3rd sem : 10 %
                                                4th sem : 5%
                                               Pro exam :65%

Total 100%
Final of each sem is quite similar to professional exam in the way they tested you but final of semester 1 only test the knowledge of Semester 1 but professional exam I tested you the knowledge of 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th semester. Failing one of the semester is prohibited otherwise you will have a remedial ( lebih kurang repeat paper ) or worse repeat the whole year . Failing  the  professional exam too will grand you the same thing. Mind you the passing mark is 50.

Let me introduce you the subject you will learn throughout this 1st and 2nd year.  Some might be boring some you will like but you will never know until you try it yourself .

Anatomy : this subject is where you learn every single part of your body. Remembering every blood vessels, nerve , bones and muscle. This the part where you will come to realize we have so much things to remember that you only remember the main organ such as kidney and you thought it is sufficient but it never is .The.Struggle.Is.Real. You will also realise that every nerve and blood vessel in the Cadaver(read: corpse) looks the same and you wonder how you will differentiate it in real life and this is where you will give up being a surgeon.

Biochemistry :This is where you learn about Kreb’s cycle and every cycle there is to remember in our body. In this subject you will question how learning this will helps you in saving patient but you will never know until you become a doctor. But no worries our Lecturer will always give the clinical importance of this subject in the end of every lesson.

Microbiology : This is where you will learn  different kind of infection and the aetiology of it. You will learn more about virus , Bacteria and fungi and the ways to detect it. This is where you will learn that PCR can be used to detect every organism you learn and you will be scolded if you put that as an answer in exam.

Physiology : You will be taught about your body and how it functions. This is where you will realize your body is very complicated and you are grateful to Allah that designs it that way.

Pathology : you will be taught what is a disease , the causes of it and how the disease works. This is where you will learn that this subject is very tough and you won’t understand it by lecture and you try to read books but the book can only be understood by band 7 MUET students only. This is the part you will realize how tough this course is.

Pharmacology : This is where you will learn about every drugs there are and its adverse effect. This is where you will realize there are so many drug to be remembered with its side effect and you afraid you will kill the patient by giving the wrong drug.

Parasitology: You will learn about animals that can kill or give you disease. Basically you will learn that there is a lot of insects, worms and snakes that can kill you out there and you will decided to be an indoor person.

***
Since you have a number of subjects that is hard. You will need a good a platform in other to digest every one of it. What I like about UiTM is they give you a lot of time for self study and you will also interact more with your lecturers. Your schedule will not be from 8am-5pm straight because in between you will have a lot of free time because we are encouraged to self study. Most of you will sleep rather than study in those free time haha. You won’t have a fixed schedule like every other course and you cannot arrange your schedule like them. The faculty will do it for you. You will understand why when you join the faculty. So what kind of classes do we have ?

Lecture : You will have a lecture in Auditorium. Basically you will learn everything that you need to focus on .Every lecture is worth an hour.  first Semester alone we have 115 lectures  .You will sit in a very comfortable auditorium and listen to one hour talk by your lecturer. You will be given the module guide so you can prepare before coming to lecture (if you rajin). Don't you worry we have lots of lecturers here both foreign and domestic which has a lot of experience teaching.

SGS :  Small group Session. You will be given questions before a sgs session. A small group consist of 10 people max will consult with lecturers about the questions. This is where you will ask question to lecturer if you don’t understand during the lecture. Use it wisely. Most of lecturer will help you here but you just need to speak your heart out. Do not be shy as there is nothing to be ashamed of . He who asks questions is only a  fool for a 5 minutes he who does not remains a fool forever. keep that in mind and you will succeed in sgs.

PRACTICAL : You will have respective practical that may help you during clinical and help you understand and relate it to clinical importance. Usually is done in multidisciplinary lab and it is done in group of 10 . Here we will experience closed teaching by the lecturers. Lecturers will guide you but still you need to prepare beforehand . Anatomy, microbiology, parasitology, pathology  and biochem will have most practicality. This is where you relate theory and clinical. Attendance is a must and  it is fun too.  As for Anatomy you will find Cadaver every week, for physiology  you will play with a lot of technology such as spirometry or sphygnomamometer to check for blood pressure and as for biochem you may calculate your own lipid level or even analyse your own urine (yuck), for microbiology  you will perform gram staining and such. Lastly, for parasitology , you will be differentiating snakes, type of snakes and such . it is fun I'll assure you

PBL : Problem based learning. You will be given a situation and by that situation you need to discuss and diagnose the patient. Also done in a group of 10 accompanied by coordinator that will help you run the discussion about the case. Sometimes a debate may happen so be ready to counter argument with your friend . the objective of PBL is to get you learn something before you proceed to lecture. it promotes a lot of self learning.it is fun discussion and this is where you will learn a lot. You may also be attached to your group and do a lot of fun things together because PBL is a fun session.

ECE : Early clinical exposure. This where you will learn about bedside teaching , how to build rapport  and how to do history taking. Basically to prepare you for clinical phase. I still remember how nervous i am to do history taking to a patient. It was hard, I jumble a lot of things but still I manage to do it. it was fun and I will remember it for the rest of this medschool. Therefore in this session I urge you all to take part because not everyone will be given a  chance to do history taking and such so take this privilege.

All and all, the experience I got in UiTM medical school is  the kind of experience that you will not get anywhere else. This is why I create this blog . It is to promote my school. It may seems little but this little things is something that I cherish throughout this med school. Do not worry about how other seniors(and me) said on how this course tough and such. Just go with the flow and don't worry in UITM we do not abandon our students . I have seen a lot of lecturers give guidance and support to us  when we are about to fail. To the extend they did extra classes so that we will not repeat the year. That is the kind of guidance and love we receive from our faculty and mainly our lecturer.  We have our own flaws but who doesn't ?

Therefore i am going to ask you, are you ready to partake this lifelong journey alongside us ?

What to expect : Faculty of Medicine UiTM : Medic UiTM ;fakulti perubatan UiTM (MBBS UiTM)

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for a lot of students since UPU results will be released. As a student myself I have been there knowing how scary it is that a single results may(or may not) determine your whole future. Good luck to all .If you get a placement in our own faculty, CONGRATULATIONS ! this is a post dedicated to all of you, enjoy !

I'm going to write every single thing that i know for everyone aiming for our faculty or you already got a placement just don't know what to expect.

1) Requirement
Students here  are from foundation (UM and UiTM), matriculation and last but not least diploma students from our own university (diploma in science, microbiology and teknologi makmal).
Most of foundations and matriculation students are 4 flatters (Lol) so if you are aiming to get to our faculty be ready to sacrifice your whole year in foundations with books and stuff. It is just a year luls.
Onto Diploma students they are all bright students with most of them get  ANC award (Anugerah Naib Canselor). They have more experience and more mature.

2) Fees

We have like the cheapest fees compared to any public university with the same course. LUCKY isn't it ? that's what I thought. How cheap? 1.2 K per sem. But still we have a lot of new and advance accommodations compared to others since we are still new. Mind you I'm the 14th batch. This fees will help you  a LOT since JPA is very hard to get and most of us are self sponsored. Only a third of my batch got JPA so goodluck !

3) Facilities
our faculty are located at UiTM Sg Buloh and Selayang but mainly Sg Buloh for pre Clinical year  and Selayang for Clinical year. Since I am only familiar with Sg Buloh Campus only so I'm going to mainly talk on Sg Buloh Campus only

Free gym for all bodybuilders !
Residential College : we have two residential college (RC), one for the boys and the other for girls. So you guys are going to stay at home occupied by 10 students and 5 rooms, so a room is occupied by two students. it is very beautiful and nice. Do we get free WIFI ?  of course ! but it depends on your home some will get some are unfortunate
My room before it gets messier  because of me
Our kitchen !

 Faculty

So this is our  faculty. Big and historical. For the next two years you are going to have lectures, Tutorials and practical here .We have our own museum, lab, lecture hall, library and my favorite anatomy dissection hall.

Lecture hall

This is where you are going to have your lecture, most of you are going to be asleep here
as it is very comfy and you get Wifi ! (lol )

Lab and anatomy dissection hall

This is where you are going to have all of your practical. Cadaver ? we have lots of them and the end of year you are going to be sick and bored  of seeing a lot of cadaver but still it is very useful to us medical students
cadaver
There is still the museum and library but i think it is best for you to go and see it by yourself  and save the best to you haha.

fascinating isn't it ? this is basically  only a part of a lot of wonderful things that you can found in our faculty. I also want to talk about our syllabus but I think it would be a very long post so I'll
save it for the next post.

First Year Arc

How does it feel being a first year medical student ?

Well for others it may be filled with admiration and respect because we're lucky(or unfortunate) enough to get a placement ,to be 'chosen' .What others don't see are those tears you get failing a paper ,or when everyone keeps on going a pace you couldn't keep , or when they told you are not doing enough , even when you are doing all the best you can trying and trying so that you won't fail in meeting their expectations.

Have you ever thought you are just a frog in a well ? all this time you were a bright student, you can even count  the hours you took studying  or you cannot even remember how many times you played because you did it so many time. But being here , it hit you fast that you are just mediocre , you are not even worth a dim ,you put an all nighter just to beat the top student but you can barely touch them .You are just you. When you realize this ,it is when you truly shine .You should never compare Naruto and One Piece the same way you should never compare yourself to others .

Being here means cramming the whole 95 hours worth of lecture in just a mere two weeks and well not to forget another 30++ hours of practical that we tend to overlook because we are used to exam orientated that all of the previous practical during our school years worth nothing .Even if you did study everyday the whole semester , it won't grant you the passing ticket ,it never did ,you need more than that. A friend of mine didn't sleep for two days during finals because that is how frightening it is to fail. The funny thing is even when he was warded he studied his way in the ward .would you make the same sacrifice ? would you throw away your time ,your health just to pass an exam so that when you become a doctor you'd throw away your health, your time just to treat people the same way you did during medical years ? . If it is a yes , you are ready , ready to take on this journey , this long way .
well throwback to our first semester's moment?

diamonds and graphite

So this week had been one of the toughest week i've been ,There have been 2 sgs in one day , lots of last minute works but in the end we managed to survive because that is what we always do,surviving. But recently all of those thoughts starts to consume myself as finals are approaching as we were left with only 3 weeks before we face our first finals together, that is. Funny how we thought this five years is very long yet our first semester is ending and it feels like ,yesterday was our first day here and we are not even ready , at least  i am not ready for finals.

what if i fail this final ?
All of this thoughts are lingering in our mind because nothing , trust me, nothing is 100% sure, you might  have a high carry mark yet fail your final exam  and you might fail all of those quizsssss yet managed to score on your final exam , because everything depends on you .That is why we put our best efforts into this, because even if you fail the previous test ,it doesn't mean you are going to fail for the next one and the same goes when you ace your test.

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah ] [2:45

know everything will be difficult from now on but you can bet on me , if you seek help from your lord, He will not abandon you, no matter how many times you fail.In every dark tunnel there will be lights, or in every storms there will be rainbows , everything will be okay in the end and if it is not , it is not the ending just yet

Verily, with hardship comes ease -Surah Ash-Sharh (The Relief)

No matter how lost you are in your studies there is still a chance.I know you (might or might not) already taste failure but that makes you even better because some people doesn't even know what failing is and you've gained an upperhand than them because only ones who fails know the true taste of success .

JUST.DON'T.EVER.GIVE.UP .Things will be tough but verily with hardship comes ease. There will be times when you want to give up so bad and quit medicine, or even when you want to give up because you are affraid that you will not make it or " i won't make it anyway, might as well enjoy it ". The thing is DON'T ever let the risk of failure from holding you from doing something that you should. DON'T ever give up and pick the easiest way , because humans shouldn't do something that makes him happy but you should do something that makes you great. You don't know how beautiful you are when you don't give up, or even when you put your 100% into things you like . How often we see successful people and yearns to be like them , The thing is they don't give up just like how J. K. Rowling author of Harry potter was rejected many times by publisher, or even when Dr Beni fails his studies(he told this story when i was in pasum ) but yet managed to be a cardiologist .Did you know graphite and diamonds are both made of carbons ? but what makes them different ?pressure.
so are you someone who endure the pain and pressure good enough that you turns into diamond ? or are you someone who is contempt with easy ways  and aims to be a graphite ?
your choice.your life

to love or not to love ?

Assalamualaikum and a very good evening i bid to all .This is basically my first post so i'm a bit nervous >< needless to say that i've been wanting to have a blog for quite sometime because this piece of mind always wonder so why not chain and shackles  those free and thoughtless ideas to some kind of internet diary ?

Man made media ,movies and such always depicts on how happy you are when you are in love.Showing how,  you, an independent man/ woman who had been alone all this time ,who had thought about abandoning humanity itself because you yourself never thought of having such childish emotions, such as love and compassion but suddenly when you met this one person, everything changed. You, who had closed your heart, cutting bonds because you wanted too, even building walls just to protect  yourself from this unknown feeling that fluctuates in this heart of yours. Those walls of insecurity, fear of being hurt, all shattered by this person.

You ,who always depend on yourself ,suddenly want to rely on this person.

You, who always pampered yourself, suddenly want to be pampered by this person.

You, who always trust no one except yourself, suddenly trust this person more than yourself, even when this person is hurting you.

Oh, how happy we are, to  rely, to be pampered and to trust. But then , this person that  you rely on , that same person you trust, hurts you.

Those long and long awaited conversation that you have turns into a boring  and dull one ,

" heyyyyyyyy " turns to "yo",

" okay" turns to "k"

Even the smallest thing can turn into a fight. That colorful life of yours turns black and white all of the sudden.Nothing excites you anymore, not even your fav food and beverages. All of those sad songs that you can relate, all of those sleepless night because of crying ,all of the romantic movies that reminds you of them , all of those advice from your friend, everything, reminds you of them. You,one who was strong , now is as fragile as ever   .This one person which invades your heart , the same person who can give you 1001 feelings are also the one who can hurt you the most , crushed your confidence , make you doubt yourself .Those suffocating feelings that you felt when everything has turn to sour when you remember this one person is just someone  you just met but is so special  , this one person changes from stranger, to best friends , to lovers and back to stranger. But then , nothing can be changed , because you give up on this person , or they gave up on you ,and you accept it the way it is (or not). You cried every night because of letting this person slips out your wall of insecurity by showing your naked emotions ,giving  nothing but honesty but getting heartbroken as a result .You start to build those wall ,depends on no one but yourself , pampering yourself because you are special ,trusting no one.But then , suddenly out of nowhere ,this other person gave you a hell lot of other feelings ,crushing this wall ,giving you pure euphoria like the previous one .

Then, you ask yourself once again , To love or not to love ?

and the cycle perpetuates
